During some recent focus groups, the participants said the people of the city of Wilmington are really unaware of the startup ecosystem and the strength of the individual startups in the region. They also wanted more networking time at our events.

I have had this idea for years to create 910 local celebration day. #910 is the phone area code for the Wilmington region. Yes September 10th = 910.

Why is this day special?

Well – Every year after Labor Day, Wilmington kind of gets our city back from the guests (tourists). Wilmington gets a little crazy after Memorial Day, peaks on the 4th of July, and cools off after Labor Day.

I don’t know if this 910 Local Celebration Day is a new idea for Wilmington. But I am not aware of others trying to make this a new tradition, and no one I know has heard of local efforts.

(I did see recently that the city of Detroit has a #313 day.)

What is happening at the event?

Yes, we will have three speakers to give very brief explanations of upcoming opportunities for Wilmington entrepreneurs but there will not be panels. After the very short discussions, there will be additional time to network and get to know other event attendees.

Wilmington was recently named the #1 startup ecosystem in the WORLD for small cities.

Wilmington was named #2 ecosystem in North Carolina passing Charlotte.

Wilmington is now a top 25 startup ecosystem in the USA, no matter population size.

Wilmington was named #7 in the USA for job growth and salary growth.

OpiAID and Apiture won major awards at the NC TECH Association Awards in November.

The formal startup ecosystem has been in place for more than a decade.
